Raymond Fong and Ferny Ceballos are rocket scientists with degrees from MIT. They met while working full time as aerospace engineers. They sought more to life than a Dilbert cubicle, so they formed an alliance seeking to understand and master marketing by learning from the masters and then applying them to their own business opportunities. Today they are the go to guys for SEO (search engine optimization) and internet marketing.
So what is SEO? Basically SEO is how to rank on a search engine, to get your website on the top ranking for free.
Most people know about PPC (Pay per Click) which is all of those ads on the right side of a page when you look something up. People have made millions of dollars using PPC, but think for a moment, when was the last time you actually stopped to look at those ads? Most people’s attention remains focused on the left side. They trust the left side because someone isn’t bribing the search engine to get on top.
There are two kinds of SEO. There’s On Page SEO (the stuff you do to your website), and Off Page SEO (the links leading back to your website). Now many people out there have an understanding of how this works and will try to tell you all sorts of complicated things, but SEO is really quite simple.
Let’s start with the very basics.
You need to understand keywords. You can rank for the ‘coolest person alive’, but can you make it profitable? Research your keyword, and make sure the work you will put into SEO is going to pay off.
Be realistic. If you try ranking for 401K there’s lots of traffic for it, but there’s lots of people with millions of dollars making sure they stay on top. It’s like having an 800 lb gorilla sitting in your living room. You’re not going to be able to move it. But don’t be afraid of competition. If there are other people SEOing for that position then it means that keyword is profitable.
When thinking about keywords remember SEO is psychology. You’re trying to get inside the head of your ideal prospect. What problems do they have? What keeps them up at night? Get into that desperate mindset of what they’re looking for.
To do this research there are a lot of free tools. One of the best keyword tools is Google keyword tool. Just type “Google Keyword Tool” into Google and it will immediately pop up.
2. Get your own website:
Don’t think about SEO until you have your own website. Replicated sites, mlm distributor sites, and blogs are not going to work very well. You need to have it in a place you’re paying for. Google will see them as original and rank them higher because of that.
3. Domain Name:
If you have your keyword in your domain you won’t have to work as hard to rank higher.
4. On Page factors:
There’s hundreds of them, but some of the most important are title tags, meta description tags, errors (your website can be pulled from a search engine for errors), and fresh content. If you didn’t understand any of these terms you can do a quick search and find definitions for each.
5. How the page looks:
People judge websites on how they look, so make sure they’re professional.
These are the major points of what you can do to your page that will help you rise in the search engine ranks. The following tools will help you as you complete these tasks.
- Google analytics
- Google webmaster- helps you find errors, helps battle hackers.
- Copyscape.com – to see if the content on your website is scraped from somewhere else.
- Google Keyword Tool – Shows how many people are searching for that keyword every month.
All of these tools can be found by a Google search, and all are free.
